Dean’s Certified Welding, Inc. has completed contracts all over the United States, from The West Coast to East Coast, including Alaska and Hawaii. We have welded everything from 1 inch to 22 foot diameter pipe, specializing in large diameter pipe. Dean's Certified Welding specializes in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), Flux Core Arc Welding with Gas (FCAWG), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and TIG in the field working under many different conditions and in all types of open cut pipeline trenches, tunnels and shafts.
Large-Scale Projects
Long Beach Reliner
The Second Lower Feeder delivers treated water from the Robert B. Diemer Water Treatment Plant in the city of Yorba Linda to Palos Verdes Reservoir in the city of Rolling Hills Estates. The feeder was constructed in 1967 and is 39 miles long. Dean's finished a reliner with J.F. Shea in long beach at the beginning of spring, 2015. We did the fit-up and welding of the 75" diameter liners.
Lakeview Pipeline (Bernasconi Tunnel)
Dean's Certified Welding recently finished 4,900 feet of 114-inch-diameter steel liner within the Bernasconi Tunnel, for the Lakeview Pipeline/Inland Feeder Intertie. We completed the welding section of this job in March, 2015 with J.F. Shea as the contractor.
Carlsbad Desalination Project
SoCal Pipeline is currently working with KSD (Kiewit Shea Desalination) on the Carlsbad Desalination Project. The project began mid 2013 and is scheduled to finish in 2015. The $1 billion project includes a 10-mile pipeline through North County. Pipeline installation is complete in both San Marcos and Vista, and will be done in Carlsbad in late spring 2015. The desal plant is projected to meet 7 percent of San Diego County’s demand in 2020.
Twin Oaks to San Marcos Pipeline 3 Reliner
Dean's was awarded the welding contract of 2.5 million dollars in November of 2013. The Pipeline 3 Desalination Relining project includes relining 27,000 feet of existing 72" and 75" with new welded steel liners. Dean's Welding also fit-up and welded 500 feet of 69" outside diameter welded steel pipe at seven separate access portals; Fit-up and welding of 448 feet of 67 ¾" outside diameter welded steel pipe at eight different access portals. Additionally, we replaced 47 feet of 72-inch steel pipe with new 67 ¾-inch outside diameter welded steel pipe. This project was completed ahead of schedule late 2014.
Sweetwater to Lower Otay Reliner
Dean's Welding finished welding the Sweetwater to Lower Otay Reliner by April of 2014. We successfully welded 5.4 miles of 66" diameter pipe. This was a collapsed liner with a full pen seam weld. We successfully fit-up and welded this project in under 5 months. The project consisted of 17 portals where we would install the collapsed liner into the existing CMLC pipe; then weld up the seams and circumferences. Once the welding is complete another company came and poured grout in to the void between the old and new pipe; at which point we welded up several thousand 2" grout plugs.
Seymour Capilano Twin Tunnels Completion Project
Dean's was awarded this contract In 2010 and won the 5 million dollar welding contract. Dean’s is currently working on the Metro/Vancouver Twin Tunnels Completion Project and is scheduled to finish in fall of 2014. This job had over 3000 ft of shafts and over 15,000 feet of tunnel that is steel lined. This 10 ft diameter pipe ranges in thicknesses from ½” to 2” with 9 different field assembled Tees and crosses. San Vicente Tunnel
2008-10 Dean’s worked with Traylor/Shea JV on the San Vicente Tunnel in Lakeside, CA. for SDCWA. Dean’s welded the 11 ½ mile 102” diameter steel pipe line consisting of 15/16”-3/8” butt welds to complete this $3.5 million dollar welding contract. Click to see more San Vicente Tunnel Welding Photos.
Arrowhead Tunnels
2008-09 Dean’s worked with Shea/Kenny JV on the Arrowhead Tunnels in San Bernardino, CA for MWD. Dean’s was awarded the $4.4 million contract for the approximately 8 ½ mile tunnel. Dean’s welders completed welding on this 144”-169” diameter steel pipe line with thicknesses varying between lap welds of 5/16”-3/4” and Butt welds ½”-3/4”. Lake Hodges Tunnel
2006-07 Dean’s worked with Kiewit Pacific on the Lake Hodges Tunnel in Escondido, CA. This $819,000.00 contract was awarded to Dean’s for SDCWA. This 6300’ tunnel consisted of 1 1/8”-7/8” thick 120” diameter steel pipe. This pipeline was all butt welded and 100% UT tested.
San Diego Pipeline Reliner Projects 3&4
2003-04 Dean’s worked with J.F. Shea on the San Diego Pipeline 3 and 4 Re-liner Project for San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA) in CA. The scope of work for a re-liner project is much the same as a tunnel project. Pipe sections are brought into the existing line, jacked into place and welded. There are both butt welded circumference seams to be welded as well as a longitude seams the length of the pipe segment. There are numerous grout rings with starts and stops of the new steel pipe lining. This $1.25 million dollar contract was completed by Dean’s welders; welding approximately 6 miles of 96”-72” diameter steel pipe liners.
Plateau Creek Project
2001-02 Dean’s worked with Barnard/Affholder Construction and was awarded the $1.2 million contract for the Plateau Creek project in Grand Junction, CO for Ute Water. This was a 20 mile pipeline, consisting of 48”-54” diameter steel pipe. In the course of the 20 mile line, there were two tunnels, one totaling 3000’ and the other 10,000’.
Eastside Reservoir
1998-99 Dean’s worked with J.F. Shea and was awarded the $275,000.00 contract for Eastside Reservoir Secondary Inlet. Dean’s welded 96” diameter steel pipe in a 3500’ tunnel and 1500’ open cut for MWD.
1997-98 Dean’s worked with Atkinson/Washington/Zachary (AWZ) on the 3800’ P1 Tunnel/Eastside Reservoir project in Hemet, CA for Metropolitan Water District (MWD). This $450,000.00 contract was completed by Dean’s welders; welding 1 3/8” – 7/8” thickness 192” diameter steel pipe. In the course of this tunnel we fabricated from straight pipe 90° elbows in place. This line was all UT tested.
1993-94 Dean’s was awarded the contract with the company Red Path for work completed in Utah for the Strawberry Reservoir. This was a $320,000.00 contract in which Dean’s welded 84” diameter steel pipe for a 750’ shaft & approximately 3500’ tunnel. The pipe sections were all butt welded.
